Rainbows are beautiful, and we love the way a mixture of rainbow-colored crayon pieces blend when melted together. Kids can be involved from beginning to end, and have fun using their rainbow crayons many days after!

We suggest singing the Rainbow Song together during this activity for even more fun and exploration of colors!

Set up Time: 10 minutes

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 275 degrees while you and the children prepare the activity.
  2. Gather a collection of recycled rainbow-colored crayons
  3. Soak the crayons in water for 15-20 minutes to loosen the label
  4. Invite children to help remove the label from all the crayons, and break them into small pieces.
  5. Take a silicone mold and add a small piece of each of the rainbow crayons to each of the molds.
  6. Place the mold on a baking sheet and heat in the oven for 7-8 mins or until crayons are melted. Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Remove the new rainbow crayons, use them and see what you can create.

Materials

  • Crayons (rainbow colored)
  • Silicone mold (note: the mold cannot be reused for food once used for crayons)

Learning Through Play

Cognitive: Planning – Reflect together at the end of this activity to talk about what your steps were. What did you do first, second, or third?

Language: Vocabulary – What a great way to practice colors! For young children, narrate what they are doing: “Oh I see you are breaking the yellow crayon, yellow!” and for older children ask them about their process.

School Readiness: Spatial Learning – Use these rainbow crayons to practice writing your names, the names of your friends and family, and to draw accompanying pictures. For young children, scribbling is okay!
