We incorporated this activity into our week of “Celebrations – Pajama Party” since all children of course love sensory play and would love to play this at a party!

We wear our pajamas at night, so let’s make a magical moon dough with star sprinkles. This is like moon sand but a little bit thicker because we added a little more oil to make a smoother consistency.

Set up Time: 10 minutes

Directions

Gather flour, oil (baby oil or vegetable oil), blue food coloring, star sprinkle and your sensory bin.

For a small batch: Mix 2 cups of flour and 1/2 cup of oil (baby oil or vegetable oil).
For large batches: Mix 8 cups of flour and 2 cups of oil (baby oil or vegetable oil).

Mix directly in your sensory bin, and add blue food coloring and your star sprinkles! Give children a portion with some tools like tweezers, or if using a large sensory bin, add some cups and spoons.

This moon dough will last up to a month if in a properly sealed bag.

Materials

  • White flour
  • Baby oil or vegetable oil
  • Food coloring
  • Star sprinkles
  • Sensory bin
  • Tweezers

Learning Through Play

Physical: Fine Motor – Easily turn this into a fine motor activity by adding some tools, such as tweezers and tongs, that allow the children to extract the stars and place them in a little cup!

Social-Emotional: Self-Regulation – Invite children to sing “Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star” or other lullabies while they play in this night time themed sensory bin. Why do they think we sing lullaby songs at night? Why don’t we play loud rock or dance music when it is time to go to bed? What other things do we need at bedtime?

School Readiness: Measurement – Sensory materials like moon dough, that you can scoop and mold into the shape of your cups or spoons, allow us to practice measuring. Children can talk about small, medium, or large containers, or they can see how many small cups fit into a large cup.
